What Stump Grinding Costs in Whangarei
Every stump is priced on its own, because two stumps that look alike from the road can be very different jobs. These are the things that actually move the price, so you know what we are looking at when we quote:
- Diameter. The width of the stump at ground level, measured across the widest point including any flare. It is the single biggest factor.
- How many. Once the machine is on site, each extra stump costs a lot less than the first. A row of shelter belt stumps is far cheaper per stump than one on its own.
- Height and roots. A stump left tall, or one with big surface roots running out under the lawn, takes longer than a low clean cut.
- Access. Whether the machine can track straight to it, or has to be ramped over a wall or walked a long way down a bank.
- Depth. Standard grinding is well below ground level. Going deeper for a new fence post, a driveway or a garden bed takes longer and we will price it that way.
- What happens to the grindings. Left in the hole and raked level costs nothing extra. Removed from site costs a little more.

Stump Grinding in Whangarei: Common Questions
The questions we get asked most often when we are standing next to someone's stump.
How deep do you grind the stump?
Well below ground level as standard, which is enough to lay lawn or plant a garden over the top and to stop the stump regrowing. If you are putting a fence post, a driveway or a new tree exactly where the old one was, tell us and we will grind deeper and price it that way. Flush grinding, where the stump is just taken level with the ground, is not something we recommend: it leaves the whole stump in the ground to rot and sink.
Will the tree grow back after the stump is ground?
Not from the stump, once it has been ground below ground level. A few species can throw suckers from roots left further out - privet, wattle, poplar and some willows are the usual ones in Whangarei - and because we take trees down for a living we know which stumps need the roots chased further and we do it as part of the job. If anything does come up afterwards it is small, shallow and easily dealt with.
What happens to the grindings and the hole?
Grinding turns the stump and the roots into a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. On most jobs we rake them back into the hole and level it off, which leaves a slightly raised patch that settles over a few months as the chips break down. If you want a clean hole to backfill with topsoil for lawn or planting straight away, we can remove the grindings instead. The chips also make good mulch for garden beds if you would rather keep them.
Can I lawn or plant over a ground stump?
Yes. For lawn, let the grindings settle or backfill with topsoil, then seed or turf. For a garden bed, the chips are actually a good start, though they use up nitrogen as they break down so a bit of fertiliser helps the first season. For a new tree in the same spot, we grind deeper and recommend removing the grindings so the new roots go into soil rather than chips.
Can your machine get to a stump in a tight spot?
Almost always. Our grinder is a compact tracked machine rather than a truck-mounted one, so it goes through most garden gates, up ramps, over retaining walls and along narrow side paths without tearing up the lawn. Send us a photo of the narrowest point on the way in and we will tell you straight away whether it fits.
What do I need to know about pipes and cables near the stump?
A stump grinder cuts everything it meets, so we need to know about water pipes, power, drainage, irrigation lines and fibre within a metre or so of the stump before we start. We will ask when we quote. If you are not sure what is under there, tell us - it is far cheaper to find out first than to repair a water main afterwards.
Do I need council consent to grind a stump?
Grinding the stump of a tree that has already been legitimately removed does not normally need any consent. Removing a tree that is protected or scheduled by the Whangarei District Council is a different matter and does need one. If the tree is still standing, we will tell you if we think it might be protected before anything is cut.
Can you take the tree down as well as the stump?
